Midnight Diner: Tokyo Stories Ep. 2 "Corn Dog"

This episode opens with a playful mood depicting a close relationship between a master comedian in Asakusa named Serao Kesera and his now-famous former assistant, Hajime Moriwaki. At the diner, Serao requests pancakes. Upon learning that the ingredients for pancakes are not available, he makes Hajime go out to buy them as the Master only cooks dishes for which he has ingredients available. Serao also orders Hajime to pour out a drink for him, treating Hajime as if he is still merely his assistant even though he has become a popular TV actor now. When Serao’s pancake and Hajime’s corn dog are ready, Serao changes his mind and wants to eat Hajime’s corn dog instead. This leads to a childish fight over a fish-sausage corn dog.

A few days later, when Hajime is on his way out, he is surrounded by a crowd of his fans and Serao is seen standing beside him with a bitter face. He gets angry and provokes Hajime into a fight because of his jealousy of Hajime’s popularity. Throughout the story, Serao is described as the type of person that is stuck in the past and does not acknowledge how his present situation has changed with time. Hajime gets aggravated by Serao’s continuous disrespectful behaviour toward him and seduces Serao’s woman as a means of revenge. This causes a fallout between the two men.

Because of the dispute, they do not see each other for a while. Meanwhile, they realize their reliance on each other and miss the time when they used to be in an intimate relationship. When Serao finds that his new gig is owed to Hajime’s support, his anger at Hajime subsides and it makes him recognize that one’s fame and popularity cannot last permanently.

As this episode draws to a close on the two men’s friendship, it implicitly gives audiences a few lessons. First, as an individual’s social status changes, it changes his/her behaviour which naturally influences their relationships with others. Also, it is important to be respectful to each other to make the relationship stable even when individuals are very close to each other. This episode does not merely present new foods but also talk about friendship which is one of the most important elements in anybody’s life.
